The Choir with No Name: Big Christmas Singalong Returns to the Tung Auditorium
The Choir with No Name performance carries a particular charge — the kind that comes from lived experience, shared resilience, and the simple power of voices rising together. In Liverpool, that energy has been cultivated for more than a decade, and on 14 December 2025, it will fill the Tung Auditorium once again as the choir brings its Big Christmas Singalong back for a third year.
Founded in 2014 and long guided by the exceptional leadership of Ema Quinn, the Liverpool choir has recently welcomed interim Choir Manager Sonia Chapman who stepped in during Quinn’s extended leave. Alongside Choir Director Mersey Wylie, the pair guide a community that meets every Wednesday at the Quaker Meeting House. There, members share tea, a hot meal cooked by dedicated volunteers, and ninety minutes of wholehearted singing — a weekly ritual that has become a lifeline for many.
Their return to the Tung has the feel of a cherished tradition. “We feel fully supported by Richard Hartwell and the whole Tung team,” Sonia explains. “They understand both the life-changing work we do and the energy we bring to our performances.” This December’s concert continues that partnership with a vibrant mix of feature songs, full audience singalongs, and guest appearances from the Asylum Link Merseyside Choir and PSS Wellbeing Choir, Sing! Sing! Sing! So expect festive uplift, a spirit of generosity, and the unmistakable sound of a room united in celebration.
Musically, Wylie has shaped the evening through deep collaboration with members. Song choices were decided through voting, and new arrangements highlight both the ensemble’s strength and individual performers. Several members will take solos, while others will help host the evening — a reflection of the choir’s commitment to co production. In Liverpool, participation isn’t tokenistic; it’s woven into the culture of the group, creating a sense of ownership and belonging rarely found elsewhere.
And the choir sees profound changes in its members. Members report feeling less anxious, more connected, and increasingly confident. Preparing for a major performance like the Tung often accelerates that growth. “For some, it will be the first time they’ve set foot in such a prestigious venue,” Sonia notes. “We nurture our members until they feel confident in their ability to perform — and brave enough to take that step onto the stage.” The moment a new soloist claims their place under the lights is often one of the evening’s quiet triumphs.
Behind the scenes, the work is complex and deeply human. Members come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and some face challenging circumstances. Support can range from signposting someone to services to simply being a consistent, welcoming presence each week. Volunteers play an essential role too — preparing food, taking registers, assisting new members, and offering wrap-around care that keeps rehearsals running smoothly.
As 2026 approaches, the choir is looking outward: forging new partnerships, expanding performance opportunities, and continuing a powerful collaboration with Asylum Link Merseyside through the Our Liverpool Programme. Plans are underway for an integrated multi-choir project next year — an ambitious celebration of music as connection; so keep an eye out for this!
But before all that, December awaits. A hall full of voices, festive favourites, and the kind of joy Liverpool knows how to muster. The Big Christmas Singalong promises an evening where hope rings out, clear and collective. What a way to start the 2025 Festive Season!
