The hyperpop solo artist, MARIMARI, ended her first Make Out City tour on Wednesday 24 September at Kazimier Stockroom in Liverpool after headline shows in London, Manchester and Nottingham. She was supported by two amazing acts Alba (@thisisalba) and Taman (@tamanburns) who both really set the scene perfectly for Mari’s performance.
Support act, Alba, had incredible stage presence and crowd engagement as it truly felt we were up on stage with her. Before coming on, two of the backing vocalists had a ‘phone call’ with Alba which I thought was a really creative way to break up the show as they repeated this a couple songs in. Their performance served as a glimpse of what is to come for Alba in the future. You can catch the maximalist pop star at BOOT Music’s Into The Pit festival on Saturday 11 October.
Next up was singer-songwriter and DJ, Taman Burns, bringing everything passion and more to the stage. The singers interactions with the audience built a sense of connection. Presenting a genuine and theatrical attitude, it was made clear Taman wasn’t afraid of putting on a great show.
When MariMari made her appearance on stage at the Kazimier Stockroom, it was instantly apparent that it wasn’t going to be your average Wednesday night. Bursting with energy, she immediately filled the room with an electric atmosphere. As for the set design, her signs and the LED panels glitching with bright strobes worked perfectly to really make the songs come alive.
Starting the show with her single First Class had the crowd jumping up and down without missing a lyric. Her signature snappy and breathy vocals made every song layered and almost euphoric. The entire setlist was perfectly curated with a mix of old, new and even unreleased tracks with Mari keeping her unmatched vibe consistent throughout.
Her lyricism in each song tell important stories of queer struggles, relationships and coming of age. The crowd was nothing short of vibrant, you could feel their awe for Mari from the moment she started up until the very last note. The fans that came out proved her hard work most definitely paid off and are bound to generate anticipation for future tours. She closed the set with HOT TOPIC which was released just under a year ago and since then has unsurprisingly gained the artist a lot of traction.
Into bold, experimental and emotionally raw tunes? MARIMARI is one to keep an eye on, catch up with her on socials or check out her songs on Spotify.
