Rising Artist Mallory Storm Talks Inspiration, Songwriting and Future Plans
Rising Liverpool artist Mallory Storm is making waves with her bold debut single Miss Apocalyptia. Drawing inspiration from legends like Fleetwood Mac, Chappell Roan, and Lady Gaga, Mallory brings a kaleidoscope of influences into her music – blending personal storytelling with colourful, theatrical flair. We caught up with her to talk about her inspirations, songwriting process, and what’s next on her creative journey.
Mallory, tell us a bit about yourself, your musical style and influences.
I definitely love quite an eclectic variety of music! From 50s kinda rockabilly, blues, most of the pop/rock across the decades and modern chart. Classical, rap, metal and musicals too! But mostly take inspiration from my own life events in similar musical styles to I’d say Chappell Roan, Lana del Rey and Lady Gaga as a few close influences.
In your Instagram bio you describe yourself as “a kaleidoscope of creativity.” How does this reflect your musical style and artistic approach?
I feel this is a great visual representation of how I feel my creative tastes to be! Also I like shiny, colourful things! I feel that whichever way you look at me you may see a different perspective and I’d like to reflect that in my art and music.
You also reference Fleetwood Mac in your bio. How have they influenced your music, and which of their songs resonate most with you?
They are my favourite band of all time! So many of their songs just resonate through the decades of songwriting. They are loved timelessly, and I feel that’s something amazing to aspire to. If I had to choose any song which really gets me going, Storms is where I take my name from as it reminds me of how I’ve built myself up after past failed relationships. But you survive! That song is guaranteed to get me tearing up as I am an emotional person!
Can you walk us through your songwriting process? Do you start with lyrics, melody, or a particular concept?
Usually I get a little tune in my head. It’s not often that the lyrics come to me first but it might be a bit of both. Then I’ll sing it usually over and over maybe record on my phone and note things down and eventually I’ll come up with a bit more to piece it together. I’ll most likely get to a point where I sit down and think out the rest of the lyrics and get it completed with help from playing around on the keyboard. Often it’s inspired by moods or how I’m feeling. I’ve just started writing a new song inspired by how I felt hearing Jessie Murph’s ‘Heroin’ which is phenomenal.
Your debut track, Miss Apocalyptia, is out now. What inspired this song, and what message do you hope listeners take away from it?
At the beginning of the song, it reflects on my trials and tribulations growing up and how at times everything feels like the end of the world. My parents always called me a ‘drama queen’ but I honestly think that people’s emotional responses to things that happen in their life are very valid. It’s especially tough when you’re young. But then you can grow up, grow as a person and aspire to become the kind of person who you would look to for support when you were younger. ‘Miss Apocalyptia’ is supposed to be a metaphorical superhero kind of version of your best self. I hope anyone who listens could take comfort in that things can always get better, and they can aspire to be the best versions of themselves.
Looking ahead, what are your goals for the next year in terms of music releases, collaborations, or performances?
I would definitely be open to collaborations with people more and see which directions that would take us! I am supporting Grace Jackman in November at Round the Corner in Liverpool which is exciting! I do really enjoy working with Barney Goodall who is the executive producer and music maker on my songs so far. I think we have a similar taste in the music legends such as Elton John and David Bowie and I really respect his musical knowledge. Lots more in the works and songs to be completed and released soon!
