Live Review: Keyside At EBGBS
Liverpool based band Keyside are back on home turf and play a sold out gig at the innovative basement venue EBGBS on Seel St. The four lads – Dan Parker on vocals and rhythm guitar, Oisín McAvoy on drums, Max Gibson on bass and Ben Cassidy on lead guitar – return to the stage on a cold February night. This was the band’s first show of 2023 following their sold out gig at the Kazimier Stockroom just two months ago. It’s clear that they have a devoted following in Scouseland.
Upon entering Heebie Jeebies you could sense the energy bouncing off everyone and could almost see the liveliness building as the time got closer to the band being on stage. The crowd was populated with supportive and dedicated fans, friends and family of all ages.
Lead singer Dan Parker played an excellent frontman, engaging with the crowd in between songs, laughing and smiling back at comments just made out by audience members. Carrying on with the patriotic atmosphere Dan proclaims down the mic that we need to “keep it Scouse” referencing the music and the scene. This statement was followed by a big cheer from the attendees. The setlist comprised ten songs, a blend of new and known. ‘Angeline’ a sprightly love ballad for the titular girl had the crowd swaying and embracing one another, relishing the strums of the acoustic guitar.
The set ended with their recently released Single, Lights Out, starting off with a weighty bass that manages to get fans enthusiastic as they immediately identify the tune. This strategic placement allowed the night to end on a high and merry note.
The band introduces a French influence in their songs as well as distinct inspiration from The Coral and The Smiths, while managing to stay modern and relatable. Representing a sound similar to current bands and artists such as Dylan John Thomas and Fontaines DC.
Keyside have more gigs lined up, one taking place just next month at the Liverpool O2 Academy, which is bound to be just as satisfactory if not more.
