In Conversation – Cheery

We caught up with Katlyn Conroy, aka Cheery, as she prepares to leave her home in the USA and move to Liverpool. We find out about her music and what’s she’s got planned for the rest of the year.

Liverpool Noise: You’re from Kansas, in the US, how did you end up in Liverpool?

Katlyn: Love! I met a fantastic scouser a few years back, and over a good amount of trips over to the UK, I finally decided to make the move.

Liverpool Noise: How would you best describe your music?

Katlyn: In the states I call it “bummer pop” because aurally it’s mostly upbeat, but lyrically it can be pretty morose. It can also get a little spooky. I used to describe it to people as “the music that is playing in the background of a party after everyone’s already drunk and passed out”.

Liverpool Noise: What’s your process for creating music?

Katlyn: I’ve experimented a lot over the last 15 years with different approaches, but generally it starts with lyrics and a vocal melody, then I sort of orchestrate the music in my head before demoing it. During that process, it inevitably changes a bit or the sounds get exchanged for better ideas.

Liverpool Noise: Where are you and what are you up to right now?

Katlyn: Currently living in Kansas and preparing for my big move later this year. I have a full length record coming out in the states this fall with another project that I’ll be touring for before I leave. I’m also finishing my first full length record as Cheery that I plan to release in the UK as an introduction of sorts.

Cheery – Concept of Love (Official Video)

Liverpool Noise: What do you like about Liverpool in general and what do you make of the Liverpool music scene?

It’s got a really cool feel to it! People are extremely friendly and outgoing in my experience, and it’s got a good mix of big city and small town feel. From what I’ve heard so far, Liverpool has some pretty great acts. Hannah’s Little Sister has been one I’ve been into for a bit, and I’m just really excited to go out and immerse myself more, make some friends, and get to work!

Liverpool Noise: If you had to tell people to go and listen to just one of your songs, which one would you choose?

Katlyn: I’d say “Concept of Love” which can be heard on Spotify and other streaming services, as well as on YouTube accompanied by a pretty fun music video. It’s the first release off of my unreleased full length and gives a good idea of what’s to come.

Liverpool Noise: What else does 2022 have in store for you?

Katlyn: Honestly, I’m really focusing on making my transition to Liverpool (musically and otherwise) as smooth and fruitful as possible. I’ve always been extremely driven on my journey in the US, so the idea that I get a fresh start somewhere new is really invigorating. I can’t wait to integrate into a city with such a rich musical history!
