From Kitchen Hobby To Cake Empire: How A Liverpool Baker Built a Sweet Success Story With Create A Cake

What began as a student’s side hustle has become one of Liverpool’s biggest cake-making businesses. Create A Cake, based on Page Moss Lane in Huyton, is now a thriving, award-winning bakery – and the only cake shop in the city with a full online ordering system for bespoke and celebration cakes.

Founded by 36-year-old Liam Roberts from Childwall, Create A Cake has grown from humble beginnings in his kitchen to a bustling business producing thousands of cakes each week. From towering celebration cakes to iconic cupcakes, Liam and his team of five experienced bakers have built a loyal customer base that stretches across the North West.

Liam’s passion for baking sparked while studying Business and Marketing at Liverpool Hope University. A night school course in cake decorating ignited his interest, and soon he was spending his spare time experimenting with cake designs for friends and family.

“I just fell in love with baking,” Liam said. “What started as a hobby became something I couldn’t stop thinking about. I never planned to be a baker, but once I started, I knew I wanted to build something special.”

After graduating, Liam needed a dedicated space and, after a difficult search for affordable premises, he secured the small unit in Huyton that still houses Create A Cake today. The early days weren’t easy.

“I had a beautiful shop front, but no money in the till,” he recalled. “I’d go home to beans on toast, but I was determined to make it work.”

His big break came during the pandemic. While many businesses struggled, Liam used the time to rethink his approach – launching Liverpool’s first online cake shop in 2020.

“There was nothing like it at the time,” he explained. “We built the system ourselves and the response was overwhelming. We now take all major seasonal orders online and have over 250 cake designs customers can order 24/7.”

The platform’s ease of use – designed and maintained by Liam himself – has helped the business flourish. Customers regularly place orders in the middle of the night, and the team regularly receives highly bespoke requests for themed and occasion-based cakes.

“If you can imagine it, we can bake it,” Liam said. “From unicorns to football stadiums, we love bringing people’s ideas to life.”

Today, Create A Cake stands as a testament to persistence and innovation in a competitive market. With a loyal customer base that travels from as far afield as Newcastle-under-Lyme, Crewe, and Ormskirk, the business continues to grow through word-of-mouth rather than advertising.

Liam’s slogan – Count the memories, not the calories – sums up the joy he and his team bring to their craft.

Create A Cake is open Monday to Friday from 9am–4pm and Saturday from 9am–12pm. Orders can be placed 24/7 via their website: createacake.co.uk.
