Hightown Inn Launches New Gallery Space with Local Art Exhibitions

The Hightown Inn has partnered with Smithdown Social Arts Hub to transform the venue’s back room into The Hightown Gallery, a space dedicated to showcasing the work of local artists. The first exhibition, By the Water, opened on Thursday 25 September and features 15 artists who either live, work, or have strong connections to Hightown and the wider Sefton area.

Curated by Smithdown Social Arts Hub, the exhibition reflects the organisation’s mission to support artists and make art more accessible. Operating with a profit-for-artist ethos, the Liverpool-based hub runs exhibitions, performances, workshops, and community projects designed to celebrate and strengthen creative communities.

“We’re really excited to be working with Smithdown Social to give local artists a platform and to make art a part of everyday life in Hightown,” said Matt Farrell, co-owner of The Hightown Inn. “It’s a fantastic way to support our creative community while offering something different for our guests.”

The exhibition also carries deep personal connections for the artists involved. Local resident Ted Carless, who has lived in Hightown for more than 50 years, said: “I was the first to cross the threshold when the new Hightown Inn opened its doors, and I’ve enjoyed countless meals and made memories here with my family. It’s a real privilege to now be part of something that celebrates our community’s creativity in such a meaningful way.”

Fellow exhibitor Betty Molyneux, who grew up in Crosby, added: “What an honour to have two of my paintings selected. Journeys, both emotional and physical, are recurring themes in my work, and it means the world to share them in a place that holds such deep personal significance for me and my family.”

Brenda Monahan, co-director and curator of Smithdown Social Arts Hub, said: “Since 2018, our mission has been to champion creativity and keep people creating. Partnering with The Hightown Inn gives local artists a fantastic platform to showcase their work and earn income.”

Exhibitions at The Hightown Gallery will change every three months, with the next show, Winter in the Village, opening on 27 November.

Visitors will also have the chance to purchase original artworks or Giclée prints via QR codes linking directly to Smithdown Social Arts Hub’s website.
