Liverpool Cathedral’s Spectacular Christmas Light Show Returns With Brand New Installation
Liverpool Cathedral is preparing to welcome back its spectacular Christmas light show this festive season, with a brand new installation featuring thousands of stars created by local schoolchildren.
Running from 27 November to 5 December 2026, Noël will make its world premiere at Liverpool Cathedral, transforming the iconic building into an immersive world of light, sound and storytelling.
Created by internationally renowned light and sound artists Luxmuralis, the experience will see the Cathedral’s towering ceilings, archways and historic stonework illuminated with dazzling projections, accompanied by atmospheric music and festive storytelling.
Visitors will be taken on a journey through Christmases past, with the spectacular displays designed to evoke treasured memories and celebrate the magic of the festive season.
Thousands of Stars to Illuminate Liverpool Cathedral
One of the biggest additions to this year’s experience is Constellation, a new artwork by Luxmuralis Artistic Director Peter Walker.
For the first time, the Cathedral’s Derby Transept will become home to the installation, which will feature thousands of delicate paper stars, each carrying a personal message of hope, love or reflection from local schoolchildren.
The artwork will create a glowing celestial landscape described as a ‘galaxy of voices’, bringing together the thoughts, hopes and creativity of young people from across the Liverpool City Region.
Schools are being invited to take part in the project, with specially created educational resources helping Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils explore themes of light, darkness, hope, belonging and community.
Children will have the opportunity to create their own stars, with their individual contributions becoming part of the larger installation for visitors to experience during the Christmas light show.

The Very Revd Dr Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool, said: “At the heart of Noël is the extraordinary Christian proclamation that light enters the darkness and love comes among us in the birth of Jesus. The thousands of stars created by children across our region will remind us both of the star that guided people towards Christ and of our shared longing for peace, love and reconciliation in our world.”
She added that Liverpool Cathedral looks forward to welcoming visitors of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs to experience the Christmas story through the new installation.
An Immersive Christmas Experience for All Ages
The show is the latest creation from Luxmuralis, the artistic collaboration between visual artist Peter Walker and composer David Harper.
Known for transforming historic buildings through large-scale projections and immersive soundscapes, the team will bring Liverpool Cathedral’s extraordinary architecture to life in a completely new way.
Peter Walker, Artistic Director of Luxmuralis, said: “We are delighted to bring Noël to Liverpool Cathedral, creating an immersive light and sound experience that celebrates the wonder, beauty and spirit of Christmas.”
He added: “Through light, music and projection, we are inviting visitors to pause, look up and experience the cathedral in a completely new way. Noël is an opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together, share in the magic of the festive season and discover the extraordinary beauty of this iconic space.”
With its combination of breathtaking visuals, festive music and a community-created artwork, Noël promises to be one of Liverpool’s standout Christmas experiences for 2026.
