Band Feature; Cavalry
Based in Liverpool, the ‘Alt-Folk’ band Cavalry had a whirlwind year in 2014. With support from BBC radio 1’s Huw Stephens who labelled them as ‘a BBC introducing discovery’, plays on BBC radio 1 and BBC radio 6 whilst also acquiring a large fan base with over 900 likes on facebook; it’s slightly puzzling as to why the guys have remained so quiet come 2015. Regularly gigging around Liverpool, the band has played venues such as the famous Kazimier and East Village Arts Club whilst also featuring on Sofar Sounds.

Their music is largely resembles that of Mumford and Sons and Kodaline; this being a genre the boys have opted to go for and also one that is highly popular at the moment. Their single ‘Leaves’ features catchy guitar riffs, beautiful harmonies and emotive lyrics formed into a catchy chorus ‘All the leaves in my head will settle down with you’. It cannot be disputed that what the boys are doing displays their undeniable talent; however there is nothing in particular that causes them to stand out amongst the many aspiring bands of the Alt-Folk genre.
‘Leaves’ is a melodic song with great dynamic range and interesting harmonies, textural build ups and a great feel to it; similarly to their other well known song ‘Lament’. Hopefully this year we will get a chance to hear some more great music from the group but as of yet, their eagerly awaiting fans are being left in the dark wondering where the next gig or song is going to appear from. With such an easy-listening sound and enjoyable songs the boys could go far with their music. Here’s to hoping their hiding in the studio ready to please us with an array of new tunes.
