Barnacle Presents: A Winemakers Dinner With Henners

This Thursday 22 June, Barnacle are proudly welcoming one of the UK’s eminent wine producers to Liverpool – Henners – during English Wine Week.

Taking place in the mezzanine of Duke Street Market, the intimate Scouse brasserie and Henners present five wonderful wines with 8 courses of Barnacle’s modern gastronomy. Master Sommelier Nigel Wilkinson and Collette O Leary, Henners’ Head Wine Maker, are hosting the evening.

Nestled next to the Pevensey Levels Nature Reserve and less than 5 miles from the sea in East Sussex, Henners Vineyard was established in the picturesque village of Herstmonceux in 2007. Planted with the three classic sparkling grape varieties, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, the vineyard is in one of the driest, sunniest pockets of England.

Harry Marquart, one of Barnacle’s directors, explains: “We can’t wait to welcome Henners during the English Wine Week celebrations. Their vineyard benefits from its coastal location – its low elevation and rich, free-draining clay soils make the site ideally suited for their production of quality sparkling and still wines. We really love what they do and how they do it. Their wines are fermented and bottled on-site, so it’s a very much localised production process from growing the grapes to sending out the bottles – they’ve established themselves as one of the UK’s leading independent wine makers. Their focus is on sustainability which is at the heart of what we do at Barnacle.”

Since launching in December 2021, Barnacle works with many independent farms, cultivators and artisans within a 35-mile radius of the restaurant as possible. With them, Barnacle celebrates Liverpool’s vibrant gastronomic present whilst also looking back to the inspirations which have found their way here over the decades as part of the city’s storied past.

The quartet of chefs who founded Barnacle – The Art School’s Paul Askew, Bone and Block’s Harry Marquart and local kitchen stars Kieran Gill and Jake Lewis – work with local independent artisans, farmers and cultivators whose wonderful produce is elegantly crafted upon on each plate. Their collective vision embodies the gastronomic heart and soul of Liverpool.
