67-17: 50 Summers of Love; Events & Performances Highlights
Liverpool will host 67-17: 50 Summers of Love; a season of events and performances inspired by the golden anniversary of the Summer of Love between 12th April – 3rd September 2017.
1967 saw some of the biggest cultural shifts of a generation and the moment the avant-garde forced its way into the mainstream. Liverpool played a big part, it being the year Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was released, The Mersey Sound poetry anthology was published, the Metropolitan Cathedral was opened and homosexuality was decriminalised in the UK.
Here’s our highlights for the season:
Tonight At Noon – Tonight At Noon is a series of exhibitions and events to celebrate 50 years since the publication of The Mersey Sound by Liverpool Poets Adrian Henri, Roger McGough and Brian Patten. More info here.
Summer of Love Debate – 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. As part of the Jubilee celebrations, METRO-BOULOT-DODO are creating a fascinating audio project. Voices of The Metropolitan Cathedral is a Heritage Lottery Funded Project that will record 50 interviews with 50 members of the public to capture a variety of momentous occasions that have taken place at the Cathedral.
The result will be a fascinating listening post trail which will launch 13th May 2017. As part of this project there will be a debate on The Summer Of Love, hosted by BBC Radio Merseyside’s Spencer Leigh with Mike Broken and Ron Ellis on the panel. The Summer Of Love debate will look at the cultural context surrounding the opening of The Metropolitan Cathedral. The event is free and open to all members of the public and will offer an exciting insight into Liverpool’s influence on The Summer Of Love. The Event starts at 10am and finishes at 12.00.
