To celebrate learning disability week, Mencap Liverpool, a locally based independent charity who offer services and support for with people with a learning disability, are to stage a twelve week exhibition named ‘Ticket to Ride’ at the Museum of Liverpool located on the Liverpool Waterfront.

Launching tomorrow, June 15th, the exhibition will continue right through to September and will be located on the 1st floor of the Museum of Liverpool with Mencap Liverpool offering a warm welcome to people from all audiences to attend as project manager Hailey Wood explained:

“We first established the Ticket to Ride event back in 2013 which was held at Liverpool Lime Street. It was such an overwhelming success that we’ve now created an even bigger event thanks to the help of the Museum of Liverpool and we think there really is something for everyone to view.”

Sharon Brown, Curator of Land Transport and Industry commented: “Ticket to Ride provides a unique insight into real life experiences by showcasing the experiences of people with learning disabilities, visual impairments and dementia on public transport. The exhibition aims to increase awareness of learning disabilities and so bring about an end to prejudice. Our award winning House of Memories dementia programme is helping to support the project and we will be working with key volunteers from Mencap Liverpool and St. Vincent’s, a school for the visually impaired throughout the exhibition.”

The project will feature a series of video productions from people who are visually impaired plus footage from people living with Dementia.

“Ticket to Ride is not just about watching a film – it is about being immersed in the ‘world’ and having a multi-sensory experience,” added Miss Wood.

Mencap Liverpool also wants to raise awareness and understanding of learning disability across the community and so are inviting people to attend a free awareness session in the Museum of Liverpool on Friday 19th June, 2pm – 3pm.

Chief Executive of Mencap Liverpool, Sarah Jones says, “the Ticket to Ride exhibition is a fantastic opportunity to experience one aspect of life for people with a learning disability. We think it’s really important for people to have a better understanding generally of the challenges people face and the contributions the community can make when those barriers are removed. So, we would like to invite anyone who’s interested to come along to our free awareness session.”

Also contributing to the project is Ticky Lowe, director of MakingSense, who will overlook creativity and creation of the Ticket to Ride experience. Making Sense, a CIC creating sensory experiences along with the Arts Council, are funding the event.
