Hotels across Liverpool have witnessed an impressive 153% rise in the number of holiday trips, according to new VisitEngland tourism figures.
The city has risen from the 42nd most popular holiday destination in England to the 11th in just five years and local hoteliers believe it is a direct result of the city’s on-going investment schemes and attractions.
Executive committee member of Liverpool Hoteliers Association and general manager at Hilton Liverpool, Marcus Magee, said: “The continuing investment into Liverpool’s infrastructure including the Echo Arena, Convention Centre, Liverpool One and the Cruise Terminal, supported with the cultural programme including events like the Giant Spectacular, Tall Ships and recent major events such as IFB and the Open Golf, have showcased the city to a much broader audience.
“By also adding to Liverpool’s historic music and sporting heritage, we have ensured that our city is firmly placed as a major business and leisure destination.”
Other major UK cities including Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds have also experienced heightened holiday visits between 2008-13, however Liverpool is notably leading the way.
Helen Roberts, general manager of Holiday Inn Express in Albert Dock, added: “Capital of Culture 2008 has been pivotal to Liverpool’s success – its legacy has driven tourism since.
“Liverpool boasts an excellent cultural programme and has been fortunate enough over the years to benefit from some world class events such as the recent 1914 Remember by Royale du Luxe, Honda Speed Boat Championships, The MTV Music Awards amongst others too numerous to mention, this week also sees the city hosting Le Grand Depart for the Tour of Britain.
“The number of hotels in the city has increased over the years and Liverpool now offers a diverse range of accommodation to suit all and all budgets. Hoteliers remain very positive about the city as a destination and its on-going success as a leading tourist destination.”
