iamkyami teases new EP with track ‘When I Call’

Manchester-based iamkyami has released her new single When I Call, featuring fellow bedroom-popper Lazygirl.

The track, released ahead of her upcoming EP The Kenny Klubhouse, describes the trials of modern dating.

iamkyami explained: “Beth (Lazygirl) and I didn’t really have an understanding of the lyrical meaning behind the song until we wrote the bridge over FaceTime. We had all these lyrics which basically sounded like a lesbian love song (which I wasn’t mad about) but PLOT TWIST, in the bridge, we discover that we’re both singing about going out with the same f*ckboi.”

Like many of her homemade-pop contemporaries, iamkyami seamlessly fuses tones and genres without losing its pop focus. Whispers of indie dance-pop and 80s synth funk blend together over a sticky chorus that will be repeating in your head long after the song is over.

Does it do much to stand out within the increasing wave of catchy, TikTok-ready bedroom pop material from the last couple of years? Not particularly. Are the girl power lyrics about triumphing over unfaithful men especially biting or revolutionary? Perhaps not. But if you’re eager to start putting together your next  feel-good summer playlist, you can’t go wrong with When I Call.

The Kenny Klubhouse is out on 29 April.
