Esme Bridie Releases New Rebellious Single ‘Don’t Tell me What To Do’

Esme Bridie is a Liverpool based singer-songwriter, returning with her latest single, Don’t Tell Me What To Do.

The song takes a slight change from the style of her previous release called Shut Up!. Despite the change in sound, she remains close to the quirky and charismatic musical characteristics of the rest of her catalogue.

Don’t Tell Me What To Do replicates the feeling of the ‘noughties’ indie pop nostalgia that many of us remember from our younger days. The song has stylistic traits similar to Kate Nash and Eliza Doolittle, yet having Esme’s personal touch of modern indie pop. Instrumentally, it can be compared to the likes of Knock Me Off My Feet by SOAK with the soft vocal tone of Phoebe Bridgers.

The track is introduced with low pass filtered guitar and drums which makes Esme’s soft vocals with the instantly rhythmic guitar hit stronger in the first verse. She begins to sing about the journey into her adult years as she observes what the people around her do.

The build-up of snare hits introduces the first chorus as she tells the world ‘don’t tell me what to do’. As we all love in this style of music, a guitar solo completes the song at the bridge as it follows the melody of the chorus, then growing into its own catchy addition. Then it returns into the song’s chorus, bringing you back to the bold lyrics that you will be guaranteed to be singing all day.

Don’t Tell Me What To Do has a sense of the rebelliousness that we get in our early adult years. The song is based around the strangeness of being in your twenties, making a statement of being at a turning point in life and becoming your own person by diving into the deep end of life. It discusses the drastic change from being told what to do to becoming independent and courageous. It captures this feeling and puts it into a hopeful, joyful tune.

Esme’s observative and witty ways of describing elements of her life keep her songs refreshing, whilst being topped off with her ability to always create instrumentally satisfying music.
