Liverpool: Next Stop New York – Full Line-Up For FREE Party At Sefton Park Palmhouse

Sefton Park’s iconic Palm House will come alive next month as a part of the LIMF commission, Liverpool: Next Stop New York.

The full line-up has now been announced for the free party that will make up just one element of the exploration of Black American Music and its ties to the city.Liverpool: Next Stop New York will be specifically delving into how music of Black American origin made its way into Liverpool and the impact it had on the population.

The free party will feature iconic DJs Greg Wilson, Les Spaine (The Timepiece), and Mark Rae (Grand Central) plus Liverpool’s homegrown hip hop crew No Fakin’.

GREG WILSON
Greg began DJing in 1975 and is regarded as one of the most important figures on the UK dance scene. He enjoyed hugely popular residencies in the early eighties at Wigan Pier and Manchester’s majorly influential Legend, having originally started out in his hometown of New Brighton. He was a pioneer of mixing in the UK and in 1983 he became the first ‘dance music’ specialist hired for a regular weekly session at Manchester’s now legendary Haçienda club. Greg was instrumental in breaking the new electronic, post-disco records coming out of New York, a sound he has dubbed ‘Electro-Funk’.

LES SPAINE (The Timepiece)
Born in Sierre Leone and then brought to Liverpool, Les Spaine began as a DJ in the early 1970’s, and worked himself up to become one of the most important British club DJ’s of the era.  Making a significant contribution to the Black Music scene in the United Kingdom, Les was resident DJ at the infamous Liverpool funk and soul club ‘The Timepiece’ before moving on to work for both Motown and Capitol Records.

MARK RAE (Rae & Christian, GrandCentral Records)
Boss of the acclaimed and groundbreaking record label GrandCentral, one half of pioneering production duo Rae & Christian and a reknowned club DJ and collector.  The label bridged the gap between soulful hip-hop, jazz and funk, and committed themselves to promoting music from hip-hop, soul, jazz to breakbeat, jungle & reggae.  The influence of Black American music can be felt throughout Mark Rae’s entire discography, record label and all encompassing DJ sets.

NO FAKIN’ DJs
Born out of the Liverpool Hip Hop night of the same name The No Fakin’ DJs are Kwinzola and DJ Illson. They combine 4 turntables and a deep rooted Hip Hop sensibility to create a semi-live/DJ show like no other. And while Hip-Hop is the anchor, a phenomenal variety of music gets in on the act, seamlessly blended and layered with live instruments, samplers, drum machines and more.
