Food and Drink in Liverpool

IZAKAYA Restaurant Review

IZAKAYA Sushi Liverpool opened its doors in January 2016 under the ownership and supervision of Harry Marquart, Kurt Wilson and Gabriella Rose King, and nearly some 18 months later, it’s interesting to see how this culinary project has bedded itself into the Liverpool gastronomic landscape. Well, going by our recent visit, things are going extremely well indeed.

Myself and The G were Sushi Virgins, and it’s always unsettling to endeavour to undertake a new experience. However, we needed not have worried. The warmth of the welcome and the highly pleasing environment that IZAKAYA gives their customers is completely “top notch”. As per usual, I always ask the waiting staff for their recommendations, in order to gauge their enthusiasm for the establishment, and their knowledge of the cuisine on offer. Ellie was our guide, and two months in from a complete career change, she showed a great enthusiasm and knowledge for her new position.

So, under Ellie’s careful eye, we kicked off proceedings with two house cocktails, expertly concocted by Sam, who certainly proved himself to be a true alchemist of the cocktail. The Bramble, comprising of a mixture of gin, lemon and blackberry, being especially delicious. And to cleanse the palate between plates, Ellie suggested a lovely dry rose wine – a Rose de la Chevaliere. Again, this hit the mark. This wine brought bright redcurrant and strawberry aromas, combined with a light acidity, resulted in an extremely refreshing companion. But the real test was the food, and I have to confess, it was a true revelation. Great food is something both the eyes and the stomach appreciate, and IZAKAYA succeeded in ticking both boxes.

The tuna and duck maki were delicate, tasty and lovingly presented, as was the prawn and avocado nigiri. Even better were the squid and prawn tempura, which were cooked exquisitely, the batter being so light. Incredible work by our chefs that day Pete and Michael. Deserts comprised of chocolate onigiri coconut ice cream and citrus sponge pistachio ice cream again kept up the very high standard. With two cups of coffee we were finished.  They were ok, but HUS still is out ahead in the coffee stakes.

What is it with Liverpool and now Castle Street in particular? The food being offered in this area is truly exceptional. If you haven’t been to Izakaya yet, I urge you to go, because its brilliant. No more, no less. Embrace the cuisine and the experience, you won’t regret the visit. Oishii desu!
