Free State Kitchen Review

Free State Kitchen Liverpool

Burgers. Great, aren’t they? Not on a first date or if you give even an iota about your waistline. But otherwise, they’re great. Well, they’re not great if you wanted a salad, obviously. But, taking all of that into account, they’re great.

And they are pretty freekin great at the little gem that is Free State Kitchen. Nestled just off Hope St, near the Everyman, on Maryland St, its signage is pretty low key but persevere and you will be rewarded. (Well, in truth, it’s not so low key if you’re walking up from the Rodney Street end of Maryland St- in fact, the signage is biiiig- but if you’re coming from the Hope St end, it’s less obvious. Oh, just go and you’ll see what I mean.)

Inside, it’s cool and simple, with a gorgeous garden to sit out in and pretend you’re on your hols.

It’s American fayre throughout with chowders, corn fritters, chicken wings, a nice range of burgers, hot dogs and a couple of salads. There’s a specials board too.

Service is spot-on: friendly but not overbearing and efficient without being robotic. Prices feel just a little on the high side and portions aren’t huge, but it’s good quality, tasty stuff. It’s doing its thing and it’s doing it well.

You can use your Independent Liverpool card to get 10% off on food, which is always a nice feeling.

Recommended.
