Big Youth & Horace Andy To Play Liverpool In Two Special Shows At District

Following the huge success of this year’s festival, the folks behind Positive Vibration – Festival of Reggae continue on their mission to bring more reggae goodness to Liverpool by hosting two absolute legends – Big Youth and Horace Andy.

Big Youth & The Upper Cut Band

*Only North West gig*

A man with a message, Big Youth arrived on the music scene in the wake of U-Roy, Dennis Alcapone and I-Roy, but quickly established his own unique style, threatening to eclipse them all. The consummate DJ and toaster ruled the dancehalls across the ‘70s, becoming a regular with Lord Tippertone’s sound system.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Manley Augustus Buchanan had his moniker long before he had picked up a mic. He was named ‘Big Youth’ by his co-workers at the Kingston Sheraton hotel, where the tall teen was employed as a mechanic.

What an honour to welcome such a legendary and unique talent to Liverpool. Support comes from Liverpool’s very own dub poet, Levi Tafari and Africa Oye DJs – Marley & Vegas.

Horace Andy w/ Mafia & Fluxy ft Matic Horns

Arguably one of the most influential and respected artists to come out of Jamaica, Horace Andy learnt his trade alongside some of reggae’s finest producers, including Coxsone Dodd, Scientist and Sly & Robbie.

Having graced clash-winning dubplates as well as full-length recordings for both Studio One and Trojan and other reggae imprints across the board, the man they call ‘Sleepy’ had his big breakthrough in the 1970s working with Bunny Lee.

In the early 90s his impeccable delivery and flawless intonation became essential ingredients in Massive Attack’s seminal ‘Blue Lines’ album in which several tracks sampled Horace Andy originals or brand new recordings of his voice, words and melodies, creating a blueprint for the bass-heavy revolution that was the Bristol sound.
