Band Feature; Oya Paya

Pop your headphones in and give Oya Paya a listen and you’ll be transported to a breezy, carefree summer’s day. Hailing from around the globe (but now based in our very own Merseyside capital), the trio comprising Ashwin, Saam and Maxime have nailed their own spin on indie-rock, with a little bit of smooth rapping on the side. Their music is exactly the right mix of chilled out instrumentals and catchy lyrics.

Newest single, ‘Trip Advisor’ is something between a poem, a rap and a song, with the vocalist slurring off the lyrics to the steady beat. With a hallucinogenic vibe, it’s a track that will get stuck in your head and leave you itching for more from the band. In their own words: “It’s a song about losing your mind on a journey through crashing waves of existential dread” – deep stuff.

‘Nothing Left’ is a punchy track with all the makings for a good dance-along (or nod-along) at gigs. It’s full of attitude but also a little philosophical once more, with the lyrics ‘My face is looking back at me, I can’t see nothing left’ rolling off the singer’s tongue. In complete contrast, one of the band’s first singles, ‘Just a Little Man’, is a nod towards psychedelia, reggae and soul, all wrapped together with a kaleidoscopic blend of instrumentals and vocals.

Every album has an interlude track and the stripped back ‘Just Around the Bend’ seems to fill this spot. It showcases yet another side of the band with hushed vocals that go hand-in-hand with the wistful lyrics and dream-like aura.

If the band’s current singles are anything to go by, Oya Paya are clearly not a predictable band. With new music on the way, fans can expect to continue to be surprised by the boys’ offering.

Catch the band live on 12th May at The Jacaranda alongside an exciting line-up including Wide Eyed Boy, Native Kings and The Debt Stars.

Listen to their tracks through Spotify and Soundcloud, and stay up-to-date with all of their latest news through Facebook and Twitter. And, for behind-the-scenes pics, be sure to follow them on Instagram.
